Sensory Development through Tummy Time

Tummy time is more than just a physical exercise; it is the foundation for your baby’s brain development and future fine motor skills.

1. The Benefits of Tummy Time

  • Prevents Flat Head Syndrome: It relieves pressure on the back of the head caused by lying on their back for long periods.

  • Strengthens Muscles: It builds core strength in the neck, shoulders, and back, helping your baby eventually learn to roll, sit, and crawl.

  • Visual Stimulation: Seeing the world from a different angle helps strengthen their ability to focus and track objects.

2. How to Get Started?

You can begin tummy time as soon as you bring your baby home from the hospital:

  • Newborn Stage: Start with "Skin-to-Skin" time by placing the baby on your chest while you recline.

  • 1 - 2 Months: Place the baby on a firm surface (a play mat) for 1-2 minutes at a time, several times a day.

  • 3 Months & Up: Gradually increase the duration to 10-15 minutes per session.

3. What if My Baby "Hates" Tummy Time?

It’s common for babies to fuss at first. Try these tips:

  • Get down on the floor and talk to them face-to-face.

  • Place high-contrast cards or a baby-safe mirror in front of them.

  • Practice right after a nap and a fresh diaper change when they are most content.
